Day 1...

Dear all,
To keep you all up to date, here’s our first entry to this travel diary. We’ll write in English so our non-Dutch speaking friends can follow as well.
Last night we arrived in Nairobi after an 8 hour flight from Amsterdam. Our taxi driver didn’t know the hotel we were going to, but told us the neighbourhood was not desirable, because there was a lot of 'human traffic'. Luckily he just meant it’s busy. A lively place to speak in hotel reference talk, earplugs are no luxury.
Our first day we wanted to see the elephant orphanage and the giraffe centre, two wildlife protection organizations in the outskirts of Nairobi. After doubting between taxi (expensive), big bus(slow) and matatu (a small bus), we decided to take the latter. The main busstation is basically a row of slow driving matatu’s shouting their destination (in Swahili) and the trick is to hop on the right one while it’s still driving. Our trip was short and comfortable, but due to a miscommunication we got dropped off at the animal orphanage instead of the elephant orphanage and had to walk about an hour further. While walking we came across a congress of baboons (the english language is amazing).
We arrived just in time to see the orphaned elephants get their milk and take their mud bath – this is the only hour tourists can go to see the elephants. They are taken in because younglings cannot survive on their own in the wild. Once they're old enough they are slowly reintroduced to the wild until they het adopted by a new family (which may take about 5 years). Once they’re ready to live with their new family, the herd will teach them to be wild again. There was also a blind black rhino.
After we ate our last Dutch food (krentenbollen!) we walked another hour to the giraffes, on our way we met another congress of baboons and took a shortcut through a scenic road.
Some of the giraffes were really far away, but a few came VERY close. Tourists were allowed to feed them and if you put one of the pellets in your mouth the giraffe came to give you a kiss. They're very gentle, but strong as hell.
After a (cold) shower, we're looking forward to breakfast with sweet potatoes and fried eggs.
